In Irish mythology, the source of the River Boyne (sacred to the ancient Celts as the Ganges is to the Hindus) is a sacred well or pool, referred to as Connla’s Well or the Well of Segais. In this well, surrounded by nine magical hazel trees, live five salmon that have eaten the magical hazelnuts. Humans who eat the salmon receive—instantly—the gift of wisdom and inspiration. It is interesting to note that in every case, this gift is the result of accident rather than of conscious will. In one story, a boy roasts one of the sacred salmon for his mentor (who knew exactly what the fish could do and surely would have been safer cooking it himself!). Juice from the cooking fish burns the boy’s thumb, and he puts it in his mouth to cool it—and immediately knows everything. In just this way, we often receive tremendous gifts of spirit when we play creatively, with no will-driven outcome in mind, simply enjoying the process.
